Haley thought about that, walking back toward her next stop. That her mistakes were opportunities to not make the same mistakes again a second time. Focusing on this way of thinking about it prevented her from dwelling too much on the timeline where Haley Landry, Level 9 Questgiver, unleashed a horrific Major Demon of Pride into the center of town. Her determined positive thoughts occupied her through her drop-offs to Mr. Bergeron, who lived on the road behind the church, and Miss LeBlanc, who was on Old Witch Mavis’s street. By the time she was making her way back toward the center of town, the sun had burned off the mist and was spreading pools of butter-white light on the ground. Haley paused near the turn-off to the road out of town, staring into the distance. What would the Town Wall look like if she chose it? Would there be arches over the roads, with gates? If she picked the store instead, would the road broaden so that more people could use it, and would she hear the drumbeat of feet from farther away? Like in her dreams, but real?

As she hoped, she caught Oliver and Jean-Baptiste in the post office, where her biscuits were eagerly accepted. “How are the two of you doing?” she asked as Oliver unwrapped them.

“You look upon the mighty hunter, restored,” Jean-Baptiste said.

Haley checked him, saw that he had regained his basic class and was now level 3. “You’ve been busy!”

“I sent him to the Abandoned Wreck.” Oliver tossed a biscuit to his friend, who caught it. “Which has never stopped spawning mutant raccoons and possums.”

“The… wreck? Oh, is that your old delivery truck?”

“Yep. Oh, these are amazing.”

“I am going to marry that girl,” Jean-Baptiste said. “And become as round as the sun on her cooking.”

“So far all she can do well is bake,” Haley warned him.

“Even better. Or worse. Both. You’ll envy me, Oliver.”

“No thanks,” Oliver said, laughing. “Like I said, I like them less angry.”

“This… seems like a conversation I shouldn’t be here for,” Haley said. “I’m off to find Eudolie.”

As Jean-Baptiste waved, Oliver opened the door for her and walked her out. “You sure you’re all right on your own?”

“I’m fine. I have to be, you know? If one monster drives us all into our houses….”

“Fair,” he said. “Am I allowed to be disappointed that you don’t need help?”

Haley blushed. “Only if… you want to be?” And then started laughing. “Oh no, that was the most awkward answer ever. I’m sorry.”

Oliver was laughing too. “Should we start over?”

“Right, let me….” Haley shifted her bag, and before she could lose her nerve, went up on her toes and gave him the quickest kiss on the cheek she could. “Ah, thanks for thinking of me, I really appreciate it, I’ve got to go now, bye!” She darted up the road before he could answer, but when she looked over her shoulder, Oliver was still there, grinning like crazy.

“Okay, okay, what did I just do, but he really is cute, argh.
